Aggressive Moves

Filed under: Casino Stuff, Fun, Games + Cheats — admin @ 10:13 am

Poker is a game where aggressive betting often wins the pot. Those players who can continually execute an aggressive style typically win the most chips. Most online poker players recognize an aggressive individual at the table, but few are able to successfully emulate this style. What exactly constitutes aggressive play and how to you incorporate it more into your poker online game?

Here are a few examples of how you can become a more aggressive, and feared, player at the table:

1. Raise from late position if no one else has called the pot. You’ll often win right there, and if not, you will establish yourself as a dangerous player in late position, so some folks will automatically fold in front of you.

2. When someone in late position raises (as detailed above) and you’ve got a made or strong starter hand, then re-raise the raiser. Again, when you’re seen as someone willing to come over the top of a raise, fewer will be willing to raise ahead of you.

3. Look for the weak players at the table - the ones who fold to just about any raise - and try to steal their blind before someone else does.

4. Follow a pre-flop raise with a continuation bet even if you’ve missed. Just be prepared to fold if someone comes over the top of your raise.

5. When a raggy flop comes, bet out from early position or considering raising from late position if you get any piece of it.

6. Always raise with a strong hand even if several others have limped in ahead of you. You’ll probably chase some off and create dead money in the pot. It will build your reputation as a solid casino player who raises when you’ve got the goods.

Profitable Poker Faces

Filed under: Casino Stuff, Fun, Games + Cheats — admin @ 10:14 am

The expression “poker face” does refer to a real phenomenon. Go into any poker room, and look around. What you will see are many expressionless faces. Many are even frozen into very serious, grim countenances that never change.

When playing poker face-to-face in a live room, one’s expression can give off lots of clues. Newcomers might not realize they have make a small smile when Aces come their way, and that a quick grimace clouds their face when a raise is made ahead of them. Skilled experienced players can often pick up on these cues. That’s why seasoned players often adapt that frozen face look.

However, keep in mind that poker is a social game too. There will always be a few people at the online poker table who are there for fun. They want to engage in banter, swap stories and enjoy some laughs. These types of players are often the weakest too and the place to look for profit opportunities. How do you encourage them to give you their money? With a friendly poker face! Listen to their chit chat for clues about whether they’re inclined to be conservative or risk takers. Smile at their quips and encourage bad calls with remarks like, “oh, that was unlucky” or “great hand” when they do hit the long short draw.

Who is the casual player more likely to bet and call at the table? The grizzled, stoney-faced veteran, or the friendly, smiling player? Don’t scare off weak players, but instead encourage them with friendly interaction and a happy face.

The World Series of Poker Circuit Events at Harrah’s

Filed under: Casino Stuff, Fun, Games + Cheats — admin @ 10:05 am

The World Series of Poker Circuit Events at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City kicked off in grand fashion last week with the first event of the Circuit drawing 1,056 players.

The ballroom served as the venue for the WSOP Circuit at Harrah’s AC, which hosted the first-ever WSOP Circuit Events nearly five years ago. The tournament area was packed with players and spectators for much of the day. Alongside event #1, a battle for east coast supremacy brewed at the feature table where the annual Philly vs. New York World Series of Poker Showdown was being held. The event, sponsored by ESPN Radio 950 Philadelphia and ESPN Radio 1050 New York pits poker players from the two cities against one another, adding to a long list of cross-town rivalries. Philadelphia, whose Phillies lost the MLB Championship to the New York Yankees in 6 games of the World Series, saw their hopes for redemption shattered when Robert Ricci, a divorce lawyer representing New York took down the event.

Also on hand for opening day of the Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City WSOP Circuit were representatives from Cabot Creamery, who in conjunction with the WSOP Circuit Events, is the proud sponsor of Project Full House, a fundraising campaign that gives players the opportunity to donate a portion of their winnings to the New Orleans Chapter of Habitat For Humanity. Project Full House will span all 11 Circuit Events of the 2009/2010 season, culminating at Harrah’s New Orleans in May. Cabot is a coop of over 1200 dairy farming families in Vermont who since 1919, have been dedicated to assisting people in need.

The first day of event #1 saw over 90 percent of the 1,056 player field eliminated as 99 in-the-money finishers made it into day two which began at 1 pm.

On the Button

Filed under: Casino Stuff, Fun, Games + Cheats — admin @ 10:07 am

In online poker, then betting starts to the left of the dealer and rotates clockwise around the table. Since poker is a game of information, the player who is first to act is at a disadvantage, since he doesn’t get to see what any other players are doing before he has to make a decision. As the betting rotates around the table, the player’s positions get better and better, culminating in the most favorable position-the last one, also known as being “on the button”.

If you’re on the button, you get to see what each and every player is doing before you have to make your decision to check, bet, or fold. At each betting round, you can see how confident each player is in his or her hand, and you can deal with that as you see fit. If someone raises and a few players call, you can count on at least one of those players having a good hand, so unless you have a killer hand, it might be a good time to fold. On the other hand, if the table checks around to you and you aren’t smelling a check-raise, it’s probably time to make a big bet and steal a few pots. Keep that in mind when you play poker online.

Six Max or Nine Handed Pt Two

Filed under: Casino Stuff, Fun, Games + Cheats — admin @ 9:19 am

In our last article we touched on the benefits and downfalls of 6 max games. Here, we’ll give a review of the 9 man full ring and the ups and downs of this type of ring poker online game. In 9 man, you’ll be playing a lot less hands. What’s a raisable hand on the cutoff at 6max, is foldable and only foldable at full ring. But on to the benefits. Since you get to sit out more often in full ring, you don’t have as many blind postings, which means you can wait a lot more often for a monster hand to take people’s poker online money with. You also get a chance to see how others are playing, as your play will be tighter here than six max giving you the chance to see how other players bluff, raise, and generally play since you’ll be observing about 80% of the time. The downside here is that you’ll be playing less poker online, so you’ll be profiting less per hour since the game’s intrinsic nature allows for fewer hands per hour. And more of your outs will be dealt to other players as there are 6 extra cards gone from the deck. But, if you choose the right tables, it’s much easier to multitable 9man than it is to multitable 6 max.

Doyle Brunson’s 10-Two

Filed under: Casino Stuff, Fun, Games + Cheats — admin @ 1:28 pm

Among all the famous hands with famous names in online poker, perhaps the most notorious and oft quoted is Doyle Brunson’s ten deuce, which he famously ended up holding both times when he won the main event of the World Series of Poker twice back to back. Most often, in the telling of these hands, people will talk about the 10-2 as if it is a hand Brunson selected in a normal sized ring game and pushed through with, whereas in truth the opposite is most likely. In each instance of Doyle’s win with the 10-2, he came from behind against his opponents’ larger holding to win at this poker online match.

This misconstruing of a true legend’s use of a garbage hand often gets applied out of context by people looking to get lucky in the use of their poker hands, and can lead to disastrous results when overdone. Though Brunson has been seen on televised poker playing the hand out of his own personal fondness for it, clearly the hand isn’t one you’d ever want to put your life at risk with, particularly in a ring game. Playing hands out of superstition or out of funny traditions such as the mere fact that it has a name is a sketchy proposition at best, and should be remembered in context, and used only in coordination with other situational faculties such as position, aggression, and well timed reads.

Differences in Playing Poker Online

Filed under: Casino Stuff, Fun, Games + Cheats — admin @ 10:01 am

Probably the biggest difference in strategy between playing online poker and playing at a physical poker table is the presence of tells.

In online poker, you can’t spot a tell even if you are the greatest mentalist in the world, because you can’t see your opponent. They be pumping their fists begging you to call, or pleading at the computer screen begging you not to call.

With poker, you have to bring all your knowledge about strategy and game theory to be successful; playing in a casino, you need all that and a little bit of understanding about human psychology.

While I think tells are overrated to some degree, there are usually no magic “tell all” tells like the movies make it out to be, but knowing how human beings generally sit or shift or twitch when they are in positions of power or weakness is helpful.

To that end, there is a seminar devoted to spotting physical tells during the World Series of Poker Academy seminar Nov. 7 and 8 at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. The instructional camp, incidentally, precedes the final table of the 2008 World Series main event set for Nov. 9 and 10. One of the tips, according to a former FBI agent giving a lecture who was quoted in newspaper article, is if someone reclines in their seat and splays their limbs out after pushing all in. It’s what is called a “territorial display” and what we do when we’re strong.

Interesting stuff, and I’d be curious to learn what other tips are taught at the event.
