Cashbox Turns its ATMs into Wifi Hotspots

Filed under: Shoppers Advice — admin @ 9:27 am

ATM provider Cashbox is all set to convert its fee charging cash machines into easily accessible WiFi locations across the United Kingdom. In a deal struck with BT, it plans to open WiFi hotspots for BT Openzone in the next five years.

Presently, Cashbox has about 2,500 ATMs across the UK, which charge the customers a fee for withdrawals. Since these ATMs are usually in lesser developed areas, they would be a filling gaping hole in WiFi connectivity in these places.

Initially, Cashbox plans to start this service with only ten of its Cashbox ATMs, by upgrading them to act as WiFi hotspots for BT Openzone as a trial run, but it hopes to increase this number substantially if it proves successful. In the early phase, it plans to open WiFi hotspots at locations including Tiger Tiger branches in big cities like London, and Manchester.

Ciaran Morton, CEO of Cashbox, while speaking on the development said that the trial is only the start of the company’s rollout plan and agreed that some of their ATM sites are more appropriate for becoming hotspots than others. On the issue of income sharing, Morton explained that BT would share a proportion of its income based on the usage time per site.

Besides BT broadband customers, Openzone hotspots will also provide access to iPass, O2 iPhone, and Boingo users. If you require more info on mobile broadband, a dedicated site like Broadband Genie is a good place to look; they have a really good section for mobile broadband reviews for an individual insight to various ISP’s.
