In spite of the recession, “self-build” homes are still popular. Why? Because they’ve always provided better value for money than simply buying a house. So what is “self-build”? It’s a home you build yourself, as the term suggests! Not quite literally by yourself, but you place yourself in the position as architect, planner, foreman of your house and allow professional workers do the job you tell them to do. More individuals are choosing the “self-build” route - in point of fact, there are more self-builders in the UK than the total amount of homes being built by any single developer. The aim of self-build is to produce a house to your precise specifications, not a boiler-plate design that commercial developers use.
I know what you’re thinking: “But I’m not a builder”. The pleasant news is that self-build doesn’t have to involve you with the physical aspects of the property development (in point of fact, only around 5% of self-builders in reality take a role in the actual building of the property). Even the design aspects are often finalised by a professional designer. Self-build, by and large, is about you articulating (in laymen’s terms), what you require to the house designer - who then creates a plan dependent on your demands. This design then becomes the draft the builders follow. See? You don’t need to have any hands-on participation in self-build. Having said all that, the Do It Yourself fantatic can use self-build as a chance to save some dosh by helping out with the aspects of self-build they have experience in - it’s your choice how much engagement you want during the development.
Since you get full control over the details of the build, you can select the latest in technology, while commercial developers fall behind because they’re constructing to set template designs. You can install things like cost-saving lighting, automated climate, underfloor heating, and entertainment facilities throughout your home.
You must ensure the squad of workers you choose are total professionals and that they build well together. For sure, you will need workers with experience of some rather potentially dangerous machinery used in construction, such as floor saws using diamond blades, wall saws, angle grinders, masonry saws and stihl saws. With a skillful team, you are also maximizing the safety levels of the construction.
This article is simply an introduction to self-build, and I trust it will encourage those of you who are perhaps a little daunted by such projects. It needn’t take up all of your time, and you won’t need house building / designing skills, cautiously, and you will need to carefully work out the budget of the project.

The HSE and VOSA (Vehicle Operator Services Agency) have, through a collaborative campaign, inspected nearly 40 vehicles in a three-day check at Wrexham, Birmingham, and Humberside for improper loading. More of such checks are being planned after the two agencies found that a majority of the vehicles were loaded dangerously.
Most of the inspected vehicles required an immediate corrective action to make the load safe for further journey. However, it was found that the vehicle drivers were able to solve the problem in a few minutes in a large percentage of cases, which gives some encouragement as it shows that through proper guidance and stricter regulations, this carelessness can be weeded out.
More than 75 percent of the vehicles checked in England and Wales were loaded unsafely, which posed a risk to motorists and the loading staff. In the last three years alone, more than 14 people have lost their lives and 2000 have been injured because of cargo falling during transportation, loading or unloading.
A large number of handling accidents are due to poor protection of load during transportation, according to Marcia Davies, Head of Injury Reduction at HSE. She said that if the load is not restrained properly, it shifts during transit, which makes it very dangerous for the unloaders. She also announced that the HSE would be launching a guidance program on loading and unloading later this year.
Jo Tanner, a representative of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) said that poorly loaded lorries cause a major safety risk during unloading and transportation, and that the FTA would fully co-operate with HSE and VOSA in saving people from being killed due to avoidable accidents.
Any company that is involved in work where employees could potentially be injured must make themselves fully aware of the legal implications and training available to avoid the wrath of the HSE and the courts. Protect your company with accredited health and safety courses such as the nebosh courses offered by Workplace Law Training.
