The yearly event organized by GSMA, which gathers the mobile industry’s who’s who, came to end last week. This event also hosts the much-coveted GSMA Leadership Summit. This summit is described as a ‘unique, invitation only’ event where CEOs from around the world come together to discuss the current top issues of the mobile industry.
The summit caused a bit of a sensation when it claimed that mobile broadband could act as an independent agent that is capable of kick starting the world economy.
It was also stressed that since the private sector is empowered in the case of mobile industry, the adoption of mobile broadband should be encouraged and hastened with support from the governments. The summit appealed to the governments for the long demanded release of broadband spectrum, and enforcing regulations that will enable a healthy platform for investments.
CEO and Member of Board of GSMA - Rob Conway, said that the governments should collaborate to have standard spectrums in their regions in order to help manufactures in lowering their production costs of handsets and other mobile instruments by leveraging economies of scale.
This claim of stimulating global economy sounds exciting and may be true to a certain degree, but coming from the GSMA summit it sounds more like an assertion of self-importance by the mobile broadband fraternity.
